Tretchikoff Documentary

Tretchikoff Red Jacket DVD (Region 2)

Imprisoned by the Japanese in Java, under suspicion of being a British spy, after three months of solitary confinement, Vladimir Tretchikoff was released under town arrest.

He survived by painting portraits and it was here he met Lenka, who became his model, muse and soulmate during those war years. At the end of the war she helped him trace his family through the Red Cross and he was re-united with them in 1946 in Cape Town where he made his home. But he never forgot her.

Tretchikoff always dreamed of exhibiting his work in the West and becoming famous. He succeeded beyond even his own wildest dreams but always amidst great controversy and criticism.

Tretchikoff Documentary

Tretchikoff The People's Painter DVD (Region 2)

Vladimir Tretchikoff was a rare combination of talented artist and astute businessman. Completely self-taught, his masterful and emotive works were indicative of a man who painted from the heart. A clarity of mind and strong sense of purpose formed an underlying structure seldom seen in art of the 20th Century.

Revolution, wars and being orphaned at 11 years of age did not quench his passion for art. Against the odds he gained great fame and fortune but amidst enormous controversy.

No other artist can boast of the mammoth crowds that flocked to his exhibitions. Of course with the crowds came the critics and contention, but the people loved his work. Across the barriers of class, culture and creed Tretchikoff captured the imagination of the people and really struck a blow at the "starving artist" myth.

There are more Tretchikoff paintings displayed internationally than of any other artist, past or present.

Tretchikoff Documentary

Tretchikoff Unlimited DVD (Region 2)

From time immemorial it has been the lot of the creative to live out their lives in poverty and hardship. A man whose skill and devotion to his craft would have been accepted and admired had he been content to work in a garret and starve, in the genuine artistic tradition, was not only a talented artist but an astute businessman, two attributes seldom found in the same person. There are more Tretchikoff paintings and prints displayed in homes and offices throughout the world, than of any other artist past or present. He is one of the most successful artists of the modern era.

Tretchikoff died peacefully in Cape Town on 26th August 2006, at the age of 93. It was another five years before a restorpsective exhibition of his work was held at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town.

Once again the crowds packed in and the controversy which began with that first Cape Town exhibition in 1948 raged on. No other artist has caused such a stir both during his lifetime and after his death. Tretchikoff was one of a kind, a phenomenon, and has become a legend in our time.

Tretchikoff Documentary Tretchikoff Onbeperk DVD (Region 2)

Tretchikoff Documentary

Tretchikoff Die Volksskilder DVD (Region 2)
